Painting with inspiration from the residents - 2021

To create this piece, I used oil paints on a large canvas with a variety of sized paint brushes to achieve the small detailed leaves. This piece was heavily influenced by residents in a nursing home where I previously worked, who are always inspired by nature. They suggested the theme and colour palette used, and some residents even helped create this piece. I enjoyed blending the colours in the leaves with the help and input of the residents. My concern with this piece, was the fact that the placement of it was to be in a nursing home with many residents that have visual impairments, but the smaller background detailing was suggested by them as from a distance they reported that it almost looked as those the background was moving, which they enjoyed.

Once this piece was created, I then gifted the piece to the nursing home, which they featured in their monthly newsletter and still hangs on the wall on the unit that I worked on the most.

Ashtray made from Love with Love – 2022

Prior to this piece, I didn’t feel confident using clay but through taking my time and through trial and error, I found my confidence when using this material. I used a variety of clay tools to achieve this desired outcome. Once satisfied with how the ashtray looked, I allowed it a few days to dry to ensure it was completely dry before using acrylic paints to paint it. To seal the paints in place and to prevent it from chipping, I applied a non-flammable glaze due to it being an ashtray and the risk that this came with. I ensured I researched previous to this.

Inspired By Ink – 2022

Personally, I am inspired by traditional-looking tattoo design which leads to often designing my own to be tattooed on myself. I incorporate this interest in my artwork at times but also fall back into wanting to improve on skills that I believe are more of my weaknesses. Both of these pieces are done in watercolour paint, which I find hard to work with. Although I am happy with these pieces both together and as stand alone pieces, I feel that my watercolour skills still have a lot of room for improvement, which as mentioned, I very much welcome within my work. These two pieces combine my passion for wanting to improve, traditional tattoos and gothic aesthetics.

90’s Cartoon Inspiration – 2020

I use 90’s cartoon characters to get in inspiration but to also work on my painting skills. The familiarity of painting these characters makes me feel comfortable allowing me to focus more on the skills that I wish to improve on. In particular, painting these allowed me to focus on my steady hand for the precise outline and also allowed me to concentrate on ensuring the bold colours are painted smoothly and evenly. These paintings are both sketched out using pencil first then acrylic paint was used to provide the bold vibrant colours. I found these pieces more useless when I found myself with a creativity block, unsure on what to create.

Eye See You, Eye feel you – 2018

This piece of an eye was created using black, white and grey acrylic paint. Instead of using a paint brush, I used my fingers. This piece was very therapeutic to create for me personally as I enjoyed the messiness and challenging elements of it. I used this technique won’t be for everyone due to the texture of the paint and the potential messiness of it, but if you are okay with these, I would highly recommend giving finger painting ago. The finger painting technique evoked so much nostalgia then I added it to sessions with participants which I knew would enjoy this technique.

Double Trouble – 2018

This piece is a self portrait, made using the mono print technique but done twice so they overlap with the two different colours. I like the contrast of the red and blue, giving it an old school 3D red and blue glasses effect.
